How Resilient is Your Career? Tip #2 is here!
|

Just how resilient is your career? How do you build resilience into your career? We continue the series of career resilience tips by Cheryl Liew-Chng, CEO of LifeWorkz.
These tips were published in this month's HomeTeam NSmen magazine. Read them, apply them to your career - and forward this to a friend who needs it!
Welcome to Tip #2 of our Career Resilience series!
Just about every professional I talk to agrees that building career resilience is now more important than ever.
What is career resilience? It is the ability to thrive in difficult situations and times, and to achieve career development and work fulfilment despite the challenges at hand.
So how can you build career resilience? In my last email, I shared how reframing your career will give you the ability to recreate your success in another context. But that's not all.
Here's our next tip…
Tip #2: Know your own unique factors for success
To build career resilience, you must know your own unique factors for success.
What keeps your energy levels high?
Do you know what energises you and draws out the best from you? Someone I know was bored and restless at work, and not could understand why, because he usually enjoyed his work and relished every challenge that came his way.
After we spoke about his situation, he realised that he thrived in start-up situations in which he could create new frameworks and implement fresh ideas, rather than an environment that required him to operate in ‘maintenance mode'.
But as the company moved from a start-up phase to a more stable consolidation phase, it no longer provided him the same sense of challenge and job satisfaction. He had not changed his job, but his job had changed.
Determine the types of environment that you thrive in.
- What kinds of settings do you enjoy working in - teams or individual?
- Do you relish short-term projects or long-term endeavors?
- Has your environment changed - perhaps even without you realising?
What are your strengths?
Knowing your strengths is essential. Your strengths are skills you enjoy using, and things that you are good at doing. For instance, if you love to persuade and influence others, these are most probably your strengths.
If you are not sure what your strengths are, there are inventories that you can take. Or simply ask your friends and colleagues, because they would have a good idea what you do best. However, be sure to differentiate your strengths from things that you have been trained to do or are required to do, but do not enjoy.
Knowing your strengths is important so that you can set yourself up for success rather than failure.
Get a Good Match!
No two persons are the same, and no two jobs are exactly the same.
If you have been successful in your career, it is because your job - and the job environment - matches your unique factors for success.
And what, you may ask, does that have to do with career resilience? Everything. Because nothing builds resilience - and confidence - like success.
TIP #2: Identify what works for you, and go for jobs that match your unique factors for success!
