How Royal Plaza on Scotts won the International Innovative Employers Award

A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege to speak at a Gen Y Conference, presenting our success in partnering Royal Plaza on Scotts in multi-generational engagement.

The hotel, of course, has won the International Innovative Employers Award for being age-friendly. This win is sweet success for the hotel's management team, which has worked with LifeWorkz for a few years now.

The General Manager and the Director of HR graced the occasion as I shared our experience in "Creating a Sense of Belonging for Gen Y at Royal Plaza on Scotts". In particular, I touched on:

  • How Royal Plaza on Scotts successfully generated loyalty among its Gen Y employees
  • Balancing extrinsic and intrinsic rewards to build a workplace that is desirable to Gen Y
  • How Royal Plaza on Scotts developed an employer brand that appealed across generations.

 

Here's the inside story...

As their consultant, I dare say that the real genius or secret behind their success is not just about attracting or retaining Gen Y employees. That would be just one piece of the puzzle. The key is that they have leveraged on Gen Y and Multi-Gen Strategies that Make Business Sense.

Royal Plaza on Scotts set out very intentionally with one goal in mind: To engage their staff across all generations. Today, it is a winning workplace where:

  • Older workers are valued and harnessed for their experience
  • Younger employees are engaged in generating new and innovative ideas
  • Work-life Flexibility is actually implemented --- not merely given lip-service to. Get this: Their staff actually enjoy a 5-day work week in an industry where its competitors find this virtually impossible to implement --- and yet service quality and customer satisfaction levels are as high as ever. (Which goes to show that Work-Life Flexibility as a Business Strategy works!)


 

Reaping rewards on all fronts

As a result, the organization is reaping the rewards on all fronts.

  • It has been named the 'Best Independent Hotel' Award by TTG consecutively for three years now. It saw high occupancy rates even during the downturn, and is poised to take advantage of the coming upswing.
  • It has been a talent magnet in an industry that competes fiercely for talent. Their turnover rate is much lower than the industry average.
  • It has successfully distinguished itself through creativity and innovation. Most recently, the hotel was featured in the media for its innovative F1 'car' – totally made of bread! – a culinary innovation made possible by the strategies of multi-generational engagement and more. 

 

So how did they do it?
